Electrolysis Hair Removal
Targeted, permanent hair removal for small areas.
Electrolysis is a precise treatment used to permanently remove unwanted hair by targeting individual hair follicles.
At HuDerma, electrolysis is used to treat small, targeted areas with accuracy, offering a long-term solution for unwanted facial hair.
It is suitable for all skin types and hair types and is particularly effective for areas such as the chin, sideburns, and eyebrows.
What Is Electrolysis?
Electrolysis is a method of hair removal that uses a fine probe to deliver a small electrical current into the hair follicle, destroying its ability to produce hair.
It is recognised as the only method of permanent hair removal when a full course of treatments is completed.
How Does Electrolysis Work?
The treatment works by:
- Targeting individual hair follicles
- Delivering a controlled electrical current
- Disrupting the hair growth cycle
- Preventing regrowth from treated follicles
Each hair is treated individually, making electrolysis highly precise and particularly suitable for smaller areas.
Who Is This Treatment For?
Electrolysis may be suitable if you:
- Have unwanted facial hair (chin, sideburns, eyebrows)
- Want a permanent solution rather than temporary removal
- Have hair not suitable for laser (e.g. fine, light, or hormonal hair)
- Prefer a targeted, controlled approach
A face-to-face consultation is required to assess suitability and plan treatment.
Areas We Treat
- Chin
- Sideburns
- Eyebrow hairs
Who Is Not Suitable for Electrolysis?
Treatment is not recommended if you:
- Have a pacemaker or certain heart conditions
- Have an active skin infection in the treatment area
- Have open wounds, cuts, or broken skin
- Are pregnant
Treatment may need to be postponed or assessed carefully if you:
- Have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring
- Experience poor wound healing
- Have recent sunburn or skin irritation
- Are using medications affecting healing or sensitivity
- Have certain medical or skin conditions
What to Expect During Treatment
Consultation
Your initial appointment may take up to 45 minutes and includes:
- Assessment of the treatment area
- Evaluation of hair growth patterns
- Adjustment of treatment settings
- Initial treatment where appropriate
Consultation fee: £50 (redeemable against treatment)
Treatment Process
1. The area is cleansed
2. A fine probe is inserted into the hair follicle
3. A controlled electrical current is delivered
4. The hair is gently removed
You may feel a mild heat or tingling sensation during treatment.
Treatment Course & Results
Electrolysis requires multiple sessions due to the hair growth cycle.
Most clients benefit from a course of at least 6 sessions, which is why a course is recommended rather than single treatments.
The duration of each session (15, 30, 45 minutes) will be determined during your consultation based on:
- The area being treated
- Hair density
- Progress over time
Some clients may require additional sessions depending on individual factors such as hair growth patterns and hormonal influences.
Results are gradual, with permanent reduction achieved over time as treated follicles are no longer able to produce hair.
Electrolysis vs Laser Hair Removal
Both electrolysis and laser hair removal are effective treatments, but they are suited to different needs.
- Laser hair removal is ideal for treating larger areas and reducing hair growth quickly
- Electrolysis is best for small, targeted areas and for hairs that are not suitable for laser
Electrolysis can also be used alongside laser treatments to remove any remaining finer or resistant hairs.
Your practitioner will advise on the most appropriate approach during your consultation.
Hormonal Hair Growth
In some cases, unwanted facial hair may be influenced by hormonal factors, such as conditions like PCOS or natural hormonal changes.
Electrolysis can still be an effective treatment in these cases. However:
- Additional sessions may be required
- Results may take longer to achieve
- Maintenance treatments may be needed over time
This will be discussed during your consultation, and a personalised treatment plan will be created based on your individual needs.
Pre-Treatment Care
To ensure optimal results, please:

Aftercare

Temporary and expected:
- Redness
- Mild swelling
- Sensitivity
- Small bumps or raised areas
- Minor scabbing/crusting as the skin heals
These effects are typically temporary and resolve with appropriate aftercare.
Skin Considerations
Pigmentation Risk
In some cases, particularly in Fitzpatrick skin types III and above, there is a risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Tyrosinase Inhibitor
To minimise this risk, a tyrosinase inhibitor may be recommended as part of your skincare routine.
This can be discussed during your consultation and is available to purchase in clinic.
